NEET Aspirant Dies by Suicide in Maharashtra After Allegedly Struggling With Re-Examination

An 18-year-old NEET aspirant from Maharashtra's Hingoli allegedly died by suicide after reportedly struggling with the NEET 2026 re-examination conducted following the cancellation of the original test over a paper leak controversy. The incident has renewed focus on the intense pressure faced by medical entrance candidates across India.

An 18-year-old National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate) aspirant allegedly died by suicide in Maharashtra's Hingoli district after reportedly struggling with the difficulty of the re-examination conducted following the cancellation of the original medical entrance test over allegations of a question paper leak.

The deceased, identified as Sushil Dhage, had appeared for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate) 2026 on June 21. The examination was conducted after the original test held on May 3 was cancelled amid allegations of a paper leak.

Shortly before taking the extreme step on Wednesday, Sushil recorded a 33-second video message on his mobile phone and sent it to his family. In the emotional video, he apologised to his mother and spoke about the pain he was experiencing.

In the recording, he said, "Mom, I am going to take my own life today. Mom, please don't worry at all. In my next life, I will be born from your womb again and won't cause you this kind of pain."

With folded hands, he further sought forgiveness from his mother, asking her to take care of herself and remain with Sumedh. Breaking down during the video, he said he was in deep pain, could not do anything, and no longer understood what to do.

According to a police complaint filed by his family, the student had found the re-examination difficult. The complaint indicated that he had been distressed following the test.

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate), the country's largest medical entrance examination, was originally conducted on May 3. However, the examination was cancelled on May 12 after allegations surfaced regarding a question paper leak.

The Central Bureau of Investigation subsequently launched an investigation into the case and arrested the alleged kingpin behind the leak. Investigators identified the accused as a Pune-based chemistry lecturer.

Following the investigation, a re-examination was conducted on June 21 for affected candidates.

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test is taken every year by millions of students competing for approximately 100,000 undergraduate medical seats across the country, making it one of India's most competitive entrance examinations. The tragic death of the Hingoli student has once again drawn attention to the immense pressure faced by candidates amid uncertainty surrounding high-stakes examinations.
